Property owners will save in 'long term' from draught proofing

Draught proofing is the most cost-effective method people can use to insulate their property, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

Speaking today (December 6th), technical consultant Andrew Leech said that people with new homes can save money "in the long term" and help to reduce their heating bills by purchasing draught proofing kits.

He added that gaps around doors and windows let in draughts equivalent to a hole in the wall the size of nine bricks in the average semi-detached home.

"In terms of payback on reducing heating bills, draught proofing is the most effective method you could set about [doing] to improve the insulation of your home," he said.

"To do an average-sized semi-detached would probably take you a day, but you would benefit in the long term."

In a typical home, 20 per cent of all heat loss is through poor ventilation and draughts, say the Energy Saving Trust.
