Property investors 'should look to university towns'

Those interested in property investment may find that university towns represent good locations, it has been claimed.

According to the property editor of BuyAssocation, Paul Collins, while it's currently "very difficult to pinpoint specific areas", university towns are good investment opportunities owing to the number of students.

In addition, he maintained that cities such as Cambridge and Oxford are also drawing a number of young workers.

Mr Collins advised: "Buying near the university cities would be quite a good investment at the moment because of the amount of students and it's not so governed by the economic situation.

"Perhaps look at some of the second cities - some of the smaller provincial cities such as Cambridge and Oxford. Although they are still university towns they are attracting quite a lot of young workers."

According to Halifax Estate Agents research conducted in August 2007, many university towns in Britain saw a 20 per cent or more increase in house prices during the previous year.
