Plans for flood mapping 'really important'
Plans to create maps of areas prone to flooding will be very useful for homeowners and the insurance industry.
That is according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Bibs), which has asserted that it agencies should work together to create the maps in a bid to limit the damage caused by flooding.
Biba technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said that these maps could help to reduce the amount of money insurers have to pay out to policy holders as a result of flood damage.
"Flood mapping is really important for the insurance industry to help us understand what the potential problems are, which homes are safe and which homes aren't so safe."
Mr Trudgill made his comments in response to the Pitt report, published today (June 25th).
He added: "There are many issues but certainly the joining up...of the different government agencies and taking ownership of the risk...is really important. Last summer people weren't really sure who was responsible for different areas at different times."
Last summer, insurers handled £180,000 claims worth £3 billion, figures from the Association of British Insurers have indicated.
