More women than men are mortgage-paying homeowners

The results of a recent survey have revealed that more women than men are homeowners paying a mortgage.

A poll of 2,000 Brits by Fairinvestment.co.uk has shown that 44 per cent of women questioned are mortgage-paying property owners, compared to just 37 per cent of men.

Despite the average woman's salary being 25 per cent less then men's, 19 per cent more women are homeowners.

Commenting on the findings, Sharon Bratley, chartered financial planner at Fairinvestment.co.uk, said that the results were "surprising" on a number of levels.

"The figures could also suggest that women are better with the cash that they do have than men, considering they have less but still manage to buy a house which involves saving for a deposit," she said.

The results of the survey also revealed that 14 per cent more men rent their homes than women, which could mean that more men are waiting for the price of houses to fall further before they make a property purchase.

A recent survey by Abbey revealed that the main cost of living for the majority of Brits is their mortgage, with almost a quarter (23.7 per cent) of people's income spent meeting this cost.
