Million pound property sales on the rise

Despite widespread reports of a slowdown in the UK's housing market, properties at the top end are experiencing a rise in popularity.

That is according to new figures published on Saturday (May 10th) by Halifax Estate Agents, which revealed that last year the number of million pound properties sold in the UK reached 8,257.

This represents an increase of 36 per cent when compared with the figure from 2006.

The Halifax Estate Agents Million Pound Property Report indicated that million pound property sales in Scotland increased by 138 per cent in 2007, representing the fastest growth rate in Britain.

Gordon Edwards, managing director at Halifax Estate Agents, commented: "Although there has been a marked increase in the number of million pound property sales over the past decade, a small number of local authority areas in London continue to account for the significant majority of £1 million sales."

He added, however, that over the last decade there has been a decrease in the capital's share of total million pound property sales.
