Migrant labour 'has helped skills shortage in construction industry'
The UK's construction industry has benefited from the large number of migrant workers coming in from the continent, it has been claimed.
According to the director of external affairs at the Home Builders Federation (HBF), the influx of migrant labourers has had a "largely positive" impact, without dampening the outlook for indigenous workers.
John Slaughter commented: "We have had quite a lot of workers who perhaps initially came in to help with the skills shortage so it's been beneficial in terms of effective operation in the industry."
He went on to say that the influx has helped to provide the construction industry with "skilled and qualified" workers, but that this was not to the detriment of labourers native to Britain.
Mr Slaughter added that it "does take time" to enter the industry through the college system, so migrant labour was serving as a short-term solution to the lack of qualified workers.
