Homeowners 'should not conduct DIY energy efficient improvements'

Professional help should always be sought by consumers when making improvements to their plumbing and heating systems.

That is the advice of a senior technical engineer for the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE), who said that such work is "not as straightforward as the replacement of a light bulb".

Danny Davis explained that new central heating systems were complicated and so should only be handled by a professional.

He commented: "The IPHE, as the professional body for the plumbing and heating industry in the UK (with its prime aim being the protection of public safety and health), does not support DIY installations, and recommends that consumers should use professionals for plumbing and heating related installations."

Figures published by the government indicate that around 33 per cent of UK homeowners intend to carry out energy efficient home improvements, according to the environmental charity WWF.
