Homebuilding targets 'face many obstacles'
Government homebuilding targets may not be met as a result of a number of obstacles, an industry expert has claimed.
According to the director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), plans by the government to impose a new tax on developers would act as a "further disincentive".
Brian Berry suggested that, in order for housing targets to be met, the proposed community infrastructure levy should be dropped.
He added: "Another [way of meeting housing targets] would be to speed up the planning system as it's still very slow and holding back developers."
Mr Berry also noted that another factor affecting the industry was the impact of the credit crunch, which has served to create a lack of demand in the UK property market.
He commented: "Some house builders are reluctant to build in the current market because demand has fallen away. It's partly because of the credit crunch, which is having a serious effect."
