Government could do more to sort shortfall in new and affordable homes

A shortage of new and affordable homes is not the sole responsibility of the private sector, according to an industry expert.

The Home Builders Federation (HBF) has said that there must be "some limit" to what the private sector can contribute and that the government may be able to do more.

John Slaughter, director of external affairs for HBF, said: "The issue would be whether, potentially, [the government] could do more in terms of supporting social housing and affordable housing through public money."

Mark Clare, group chief executive of Barratt Developments, commented in an interview published in Inside Housing, that builders are "unlikely" to hit the government's target for new homes.

According to Mr Clare, the government's goal of 240,000 new homes a year by 2016 was hampered not only by the credit crunch but also by strict definitions of a zero carbon home.

Another problem, said Mr Clare, was the fact that builders were waiting for the economy to improve before they embarked on large scale projects.
