23 university towns see house price rises of over 50 per cent

Some 23 university towns have experienced house price rises of over 50 per cent, according to the Halifax University Town House Price Review.

The research looked reviewed prices from June 2003 until June 2008 and has drawn conclusions after studying data from the Times Top Universities League Table and the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

In addition to the 23 universities that saw house price growth of over 50 per cent, Belfast, Dundee and Bangor all experienced average house price increases of over 100 per cent.

Guilford was deemed the most expensive town to buy a property with the average price £363,503 for a house and Hull was the least expensive with an average house price of £124,108.

Commenting on the research, Nitesh Patel, Economist at Halifax, said: "Over a third of the university towns in this review experienced average house price growth of over (50 per cent) in the last five years."

He warned that while it can be a "good investment" to buy property for a child at university it does depend on "parents' personal circumstances and property prices around the university in question".

An average of the Nationwide and Halifax indices indicates that house prices in June had fallen by 9.5 per cent on last year's levels.
