I have a long standing interest in property stemming from my father owning a timber frame construction firm. During my school holidays I had the opportunity to gain insight in to all aspects of the building profession by working on site and in the office. What I quickly learnt was that it wasn't the builders that made the money, it was the developers.

So I sought a position working in a property investment firm. I had to learn the ropes working within the estate agency world first and did so for two years. I have now been working in Choices Investments for a further two years and have learnt exactly how the profit is made.

I have been able to share that knowledge with my clients and even family. A little over a year ago as the property prices fell like a stone, I helped my parents make their first investment. It was a two bedroom purpose built apartment in Whyteleafe, Surrey. Local agents had valued the property at £170,000 but Choices had negotiated the seller down to £132,000 for a fast sale. The property was in a great location and would still sell today for £165,000 now that they have given it a light refurbishment. That means Choices and I have helped make them £33,000! That won't pay for their retirement but it will certainly help and as they are looking to hold the property for another ten years I expect that they will make a six figure sum when they decide to sell. Who knows, they may even pass it on to me one day to help with my own steadily increasing portfolio! Their retirement is getting closer each day and they take comfort in the knowledge that they have taken positive steps towards securing their future.
