Properties out of place

Some people refuse to change their homes or shift to other places due to sentimental reasons or precious memories attached to them, but then they do start thinking about change once an attractive monetary offer is made for the same. And there are some, who are rock solid that come what may, they won’t budge from that house, nor will they let anyone touch even a brick of it. Just like a nail hammered into wood which refuses to let go, perhaps that’s the reason the term came into existence – nail houses! These are essentially used to describe houses of those stubborn nails, i.e. owners, who obstruct development which demands them to demolish and leave their homes.

Let’s have a look at some interesting nail houses and the luring offers made despite which these owners refused to part with their abodes.

There is a famous case of Yang Wu and his wife Wu Ping, who refused to vacate their home which had housed their three generations for construction of a six storey shopping mall. So hell- bent were they, that even after their power and water supply had been deliberately cut off, a 10 meter deep pit excavated beside their home in order to make inhabitable conditions and an irresistible offer of US $453,000, they refused to budge from their house. Talk about paying a price for a house!

In another example, a nail-house owner, Edith Macefield lived in her house for over decades and was offered huge amounts of money by several developers to leave the place. Perfectly fixed like a missing puzzle piece in between the two structures which propose to be commercial holdings, with a dainty little car parked right outside, it speaks about the strong determination of the owner to stay there for as long as she can make do with the surroundings. Before she died, she forged an unlikely friendship with the head of the person in charge of construction in that land and ensured that her home would be protected.

This amazing example shows the attachment towards his home. It was being eaten up by commercial and residential properties on either sides and instead of accepting the $ 3 million compensation; he took a loan and converted his house into a pizza outlet. Very inspiring we must say!

This one is a favourite! At Narita airport in Japan, farmers refused to part with their land which happens to be situated in the middle of the airport! What is more astonishing is that, they are in very close proximity to the runway and don’t mind experiencing the tremor each time a flight takes off or lands!

The next one needs no explanation. Looks clearly out-of-place and in no mood to move from where it is.

It is wonderful how a lot of courage and will power can resist such tempting offers to leave their homes, when they could afford something much bigger and better with the compensation amount, and yet theses owners chose to stand by their homes in trying times.
