Housing Plans Could Turn Johnston into New Town

The village of Johnston could soon be transformed into a town, if plans for a new housing development are approved, a local councillor has told the Western Telegraph.

Pembrokeshire County Council has received plans for building 153 new homes on land to the east of Milford Road. The developers, Beatgrove Ltd, attended a recent community council meeting to discuss the plans and welcomed the views put forward by members, according to Johnston county and community councillor Ken Rowlands. He said: ?We must remember that there is a dire need for housing in Pembrokeshire and we have got quite a few housing developments going up in Johnston.?

Councillor Rowlands also told the Western Telegraph that it was time the village expanded: ?We were undoubtedly the biggest village and I think we will now be looking at a township.? He said the plans, which have been sympathetically designed, and lay out the concerns about density and drainage by the developers, haven?t met any huge opposition.

If approved, the new homes will be added to more than 100 new houses already under construction in Johnston. The plans include a mix of two, three and four bedroom detached, semi-detached and terraced houses and bungalows, as well as flats and 46 affordable units.

Within walking distance of the new development would be the local facilities including the school, post office, play area and doctor?s surgery, as well as easy access to the main road, bus services and railway station. Also included in the plans is a significant amount of public amenity space and recycling facilities.
