As part of a long-term housing scheme, more than 130 homes will be planned for the immediate future of Brighton and Hove as the council has approved two planning applications.
The majority of the new homes will be focused upon providing housing for the 11,500 persons and families who are currently on the housing waiting list. To this end, the scheme will include 40 flats to be built on four storeys at the former Caffyns garage on the Hove seafront.
In addition, the old nurses’ homes off Pankhurst Avenue close to the Brighton racecourse will be converted into 95 flats. The Pankhurst development will include private gardens at the ground floor, as well as a community centre.
In Hove, 16 affordable homes will be constructed and offered either for rent or shared ownership. This community of homes will also have a new surgery, commercial area, and parking.
In the Brighton development, the BBC News website reported that 80 per cent of the homes to be constructed will be affordable, and offered either for rent or shared ownership. Both the Brighton and Hove affordable homes projects will be managed by the Southern Housing Group.
The scheme is part of a wider council-approved plan to provide 8,500 new homes in the area by 2025, according to an Inside Housing report. To this end, Geoff Raw was appointed as the director responsible for drawing up plans to make the plan a reality.
Mr Raw was previously involved at the Housing Corporation as national programme manager and director of London investment. In his new role, he will be responsible for identifying sites for new affordable family homes in the area.
