5 Top Relocating Tips
If you’re relocating because of a job transfer, or just because you need a change of pace, there are some things you should know before packing up. It never hurts to be prepared, especially when making such a big change. So grab yourself the best moving quote you can and follow these tips for a successful re locate.
1. Figure out the cost of moving.
Before you move, be sure you have enough money to do so. Take into account all the expenses associated with moving: packing supplies, movers, transportation, a temporary place of residence, and new home costs.
2. Decide how much help you want/need.
Moving is a big job, and there’s a lot of hassle involved. If you’re on a tight budget, you might be thinking about doing everything yourself. While this sounds practical in theory, it’s often more trouble than it’s worth. Depending on your budget, decide which of these options you’ll choose:
- Moving everything yourself
- Moving boxes yourself, but hiring someone to move furniture
- Hiring a moving company to move everything
- Hiring someone to do everything, from packing boxes to moving you into your new home
Even if you have a limited amount of money to work with, you should at least get help moving your furniture. Trying to move heavy items alone is bound to leave you frustrated and possibly even injured.
3. Get rid of excess.
This is especially relevant if your move is long-distance. You don’t want to bring along every little useless trinket if you’re moving 500 to 3,000 miles away. If you have some time before the move, you can have a moving sale to try to get rid of some of the unnecessary pileup. Anything that’s left over can go to charity.
4. Have a place to relocate to.
This sounds obvious, but some people don’t think ahead and don’t have a place to stay when they arrive in their new city. Even if you bought a house in the new location, you may have to live somewhere else temporarily while closing. Look up short-term apartment rentals or hotels with amenities such as laundry rooms and kitchens. Call these places and make sure there will be room when you arrive.

5. Learn about your new city.
Find out what there is to do, so you’ll be ready to explore from day 1.
Moving doesn’t have to be a hassle. With some planning and a little bit (or a lot) of help from professional movers, relocating can be an enjoyable, smooth transition.
