£1bn subsidised work plan for young jobless

The Government today unveiled a £1billion scheme to get young jobless people back into work.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said the youth contract scheme would pay employers subsidies worth £2275 to take on 160,000 18-to 24-year-olds, for six months, over three years.

The plan is aimed at attempting to deal with the increasing problem of youth unemployment in the UK, which is currently at record levels.

One in five 16-24s are not in full-time work, education or training.

The new programme will start in April and will see 400,000 work and training placements created in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers will be given wage incentives equivalent to half of the youth national minimum wage.

Clegg told the BBC young people were rightly “demoralised” at the lack of opportunities.
